Since the Fall of 2023, the Junior League of Akron has been working towards addressing period poverty in the Greater Akron Area.  Thanks to member and community support, we have already contributed over 4,000 one-month supply period packs to local community agencies in need.

What is Period Poverty?

Period Poverty is a lack of access to period supplies, with cost usually being the barrier.  Stigma around menstruation and a lack of access to private, clean facilities to change menstrual products can also contribute to period poverty.    When supplies can’t be purchased, women will use the supplies they do have for longer than is sanitary and safe – sometimes using one single pad for multiple days.  They will turn to substitutes such as toilet paper, socks, paper towels, and plastic bags, which can lead to health issues, such as an increased risk of infection.   

Period Equity Improves the Health and Wellness of Women & Girls in our Community

 Ensuring women and girls have access to period products at our local food pantries and women’s shelters addresses a need in our community that often goes unnoticed.  Access to period products eliminates a potential barrier to upward mobility and success, allows women to experience menstruation with dignity and without shame or embarrassment, and positively contributes to mental and physical well-being.
